In everyone’s life there is one person whose influence and presence dramatically affects the direction of their life. Grant was that person for me and for so many. His influence in the development of the dance program at Arts Umbrella, and his influence on how I saw dance, was profound and spanned over many years.
I find myself quoting him with great frequency. He was able to articulate concisely and clearly ideas that we all grappled with. His fine mind was able to express the passion and excitement of everything that was good and smart in dance. I adored his ability to speak to what was true and good in the work of dance, and to celebrate it.
I never felt he patronized or spoke anything but the truth. He believed that dance should be smart, articulate, and athletic. His guidance, support, and friendship defined the direction of the dance program, and have defined the person I am today.
He was a man who inspired respect. Grant has altered the course of dance in Canada with the legacy of his ideas, his words and his actions.
